The Vulvovaginal Interdisciplinary Pain Experiences and Research (VIPER) Lab, under the direction of Dr. Olivia Adams, is dedicated to advancing the understanding of vulvovaginal pain conditions through an interdisciplinary lens.

By integrating perspectives from areas like psychology, sexual health, history, and gender & sexuality studies, the lab examines the complex biopsychosocial factors contributing to chronic pelvic pain disorders. A key focus of the VIPER Lab is investigating patient experiences of chronic vulvovaginal pain, with special attention to the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality. We also explore how both present-day and historical biases in medical systems and medical education contribute to diagnostic delays and other negative healthcare experiences. Our research projects are interdisciplinary, spanning from exploratory survey studies to qualitative research to health literacy and medical education projects. By critically engaging with issues of gender, sexuality, and healthcare disparities, the lab aims to challenge systemic barriers in pain research and promote more inclusive, patient-centered approaches to care.
